Key Highlights of the 2025 Indian Market

  • The Sedan Comeback: Against the SUV trend, the Maruti Dzire became the #1 seller. Its success was fueled by its reliability in the fleet/taxi segment and a premium makeover that attracted family buyers.
  • The “GST 2.0” Effect: The government reduced GST from 28% to 18% for small cars (under 4m) late in the year. This caused a 90% spike in December sales for entry-level models like the Alto and Wagon R, though they finished lower in the overall annual ranking.
  • SUV Dominance: Despite the Dzire taking the top spot, 6 out of the top 10 cars were SUVs. The Hyundai Creta remained the king of the mid-size SUV segment, bolstered by the success of its Electric (EV) variant.
  • Tata & Mahindra Rise: Tata Motors held two strong positions with the Nexon and Punch. Mahindra also saw record growth, with the Scorpio (N + Classic) becoming a top-10 staple and Mahindra briefly overtaking Hyundai for the #2 manufacturer spot in certain months.
  • Electric Breakthrough: The MG Windsor EV emerged as the best-selling individual EV model of the year, selling over 46,000 units, significantly helping JSW MG Motor’s market share.
